The Himalayas is known to beautiful views and many endemic and threatened species whose potential value to mankind of all generations is enormous. These resources have significant economic value as well, which if properly utilized can provide strong stimuli to mountain community development. There have been negative impacts of tourism as well, and of the various impacts that on the environment is perhaps most serious, as it jeopardizes not only tourism but also the livelihood of the mountain communities that depend on the mountain resources. The objective of this paper is to argue the important role of local communities on sustainable development in the mountain areas. This consists of two parts. The firstpart discusses definition of tourism and relations between the host, the guest and the local resources.
