A questionnaire was conducted to 775 adult users of 64 Kominkan in Hiroshima City and 775 adult non-users. The following findings were obtained: (1) as for public institutions of adult education, more women used Kominkan than men, more elderly than non-elderly people, and more unemployed than employed people. In addition, there was a strong tendency that they wanted to get involved in group activities or seek companionship. (2) as for institutions of higher education, elderly or unemployed people called preferred short-term learning opportunities such as extended courses; on the other hand, younger or employed people preferred continuous learning opportunities such as studying full-time or part-time at a university.
